My Students

I teach in rural Title I school where over 55 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Regardless of the financial struggles my community faces, my students are extremely enthusiastic about learning and take pride in their school community.

Since I teach in a rural community school, many students do not have frequent opportunities to visit public libraries, museums, science centers, or other enrichment opportunities; for these students, their exposure to a literacy rich environment is limited to their time spent at school each day.

As a teacher, I have the honor of encouraging my students to embrace the educational independence that they so earnestly crave, and I enjoy creating an environment where students are active participants in their own learning.

My Project

Many of my students are intimidated by the finality of written work. Revisions are often time consuming and frequently students spend more time erasing and rewriting rather than being able to focus on the content being practiced.

Offering students the opportunity to use whiteboards helps eliminate much of the stress associated with typical pencil and paper assignments.

Students can easily erase with the swipe of their hand and are no longer intimidated by the prospect of having the wrong answer.

These materials, a class set of white board paddles and their own storage system, will encourage my students to take risks and attempt difficult tasks. They will be able to visually show their thinking in a less intimidating format.
