This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an elementary Title I school in D.C. with an ESEA classification of Focus. A great number of my students receive free or reduce breakfast and lunch throughout the day. Instruction in my classroom is in a dual-language environment. My students, a majority of whom are English speakers, learn math and science in Spanish with me.
My students are wonderfully creative eight and nine year-olds.
They are imaginative, resilient, and have an incredible amount of ingenuity. They are curious about technology, languages, and other cultures. They are vocal social activists who have a deep-rooted understanding that social change starts with them.
My students' primary exposure to Spanish is during our two and a half hours together each day with very little opportunity to practice, or further develop, their language skills outside of the classroom. These young learners demonstrate eagerness and resilience everyday in my classroom by showing up ready and happy to learn new words and content in Spanish. They share with great pride Spanish interactions outside of the classroom, and have shown unbelievable growth in our time together.
My Project
In order to better support learning in my classroom, my students need more age-appropriate and interesting reading material in Spanish. For this reason, I selected translations of Roal Dahl's books into Spanish, as well as some original novels in Spanish which can foster both a love for the language and reading such as Pateando lunas by Roy Berocay.
My students are avid readers who enjoy quiet reading time after finishing instruction.
Having a greater variety of novels that are age-appropriate will greatly help in encouraging students to choose to read novels in Spanish rather than English after they have completed their work, or during free reading time.
