Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We serve an inner city, high poverty, and trauma exposed community. Our students want to learn; however, they struggle to attain the tools and resources necessary to do so.

These students work hard and are gaining more ground with their learning every day.

I have a large group that stays after school almost daily for an hour to continue their learning through Homework and Reading Clubs. These children power through all the adversity they face on a daily basis. They are strong and determined to learn. All they need are the tools.

My Project

The book Wonder, lends its self to so many Literacy skills learned in fifth grade, Character traits, Theme, Plot, and Sequence of events.

However, just as importantly,  it allows open discussion of acceptance, and bullying of peers.

Wonder opens up the classroom to a safe place conversation about topics our students deal with every day in the hallways, and outside of the school.

This book is popular with students and becomes more engaging as the story gets told, making students continuously want to read one more page or talk about one more event. 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts gives positive statements every day that students can take with them through discussion and written work. Choose Kind Journal and The Kindness Project: A 30 Day Challenge gives students the objective to actively be kid and record their understanding and actions of Kindness.

These books would be a wonderful addition to our classroom and social learning unit.
