Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Differentiated instruction is crucial to catching up students who are lacking remedial skills while challenging those that are at or above grade level. I recently started using learning centers in my classroom, and they have proven to be an irreplaceable tool. Research shows that individualized instruction improves test scores dramatically, and I have seen this work firsthand.
The students I work with are in the eighth grade but range from a fifth to a tenth grade level in math. This difference in ability requires differentiation, which is best served through learning centers in which students do independent work that serves their individual needs, while I work with small groups. I have made remarkable gains by working in small groups with students, but our school lacks the technology or curriculum that would best benefit those students working in the independent small groups.
Although learning centers are time-consuming to create, I have designed them in the past by myself, and they have shown tremendous pay-off on standardized and classroom tests. I recently found activities for students to engage in and a group of leapfrog games that would allow the students an interactive and entertaining way to review math skills and challenge themselves to achieve higher scores. All of my students would definitely choose learning math in a fun way as opposed to the traditional way.
My students are able and excited about math, and I think that with the right tools, they will be able to compete with students throughout the city. I want to give them the opportunity to do hands-on and engaging projects and learn to work together in small groups.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal. I am enthusiastic about the activities and the leapfrog games because they target 6-8 grade math levels and will foster healthy competition for my students. Boy, what a welcome change that would be!
