Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach roughly 150 students and of those students, about 60 of them are English language learners. Most of my English language learners have only been in the United States a few months to a year, never speaking a language other than their own up until enrolling at this school.
Imagine not only starting school in a new environment but being in a classroom where the teacher mainly speaks a language you don't understand.
Many of my students have experienced this feeling and the daily stress of a new environment can be overwhelming at times. I would love to create a positive outlet for my students who desire a sense of belonging and a connection to their peers through the development of a fitness club.
Our middle school is located in an urban area and with many of the students coming from extremely low-income families. My students are dedicated and hard working. The incorporation of basic exercise equipment will give them the opportunity to have not only a healthy lifestyle but healthy relationships with their peers.
My Project
Each day a group of girls gather in my classroom before school and during lunch. The students have expressed a desire to create a fitness club at school.
With the creation and development of a fitness club, students will now have a positive outlet from the daily stresses of home and school but most importantly developing a healthy relationship with other students in the club.
This project is requesting the equipment needed to make this happen!
The club will start off with roughly ten girls so that special attention can be given to proper handling of weights, healthy lifestyle conversations and goal setting. Since the theme of this fitness club is empowering young girls we have adopted the term Wonder Woman. To showcase the club and build a bond, each girl we receive a special lanyard and bag for their workout items. During lunch/recess, age-appropriate workouts will be offered. Incorporating the Bosu balance trainer will help build core strength through a variety of movements. With the Bosu ball, the students can then add in other techniques using the weighted medicine ball, resistance bands and kettle bells. At this time, the students perform workouts that are driven by dance such as Zumba but they would like to incorporate weights and take their ideas to the next level.
