Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us bring science alive - literally. As a second-year teacher in a low-income school on the east side of San Jose, bringing nature into the classroom can be difficult. This proposal brings butterflies into the classroom. The "Butterflies in the Classroom Kits" contain painted lady larvae that have been designed for classrooms and homes. My twenty second-grade students will work hands-on with living butterflies. The initial culture cups sent with the butterfly kit contain food for 33 caterpillars. Each student can transfer a caterpillar to its own cup and care for, study, and name their very own caterpillar throughout its life cycle. The four week cycle will allow my students an interactive experience with the butterflies we study through science and literature. We have received funding to go on a fieldtrip to see the butterflies at Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz this year before their migration south. I know having the experience of seeing the butterfly metamorphosis before the fieldtrip would mean a lot. The butterfly kit also comes with worksheets, background information, and activities to engage the students. Please help my students experience the world of nature in our classroom.
