Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to the sixth grade excited, eager and apprehensive as they enter the world of middle school. My students struggle with reading and some are reluctant to persevere. Many of them are English Language Learners and many have an Individualized Education Plan. Many students in our class do not have the resources or supplies needed for school. Some of my students try very hard, while others are frustrated and give up easily.
In our classroom, we consistently teach the value of determination, hard work and having a growth mindset.
We do our best to motivate these youth to keep trying and to believe in themselves. We have a Wall of Fame where students earn rewards for reaching certain milestones in the reading program. Many of my students are very motivated to see how far they can go towards their goals as we celebrate their success.
My Project
One thing that I am passionate about teaching my students is having empathy for others, preventing bullying and spreading kindness. We use a variety of ways to help our students understand the positive impact they can have on others and the world around them.
I would like to start the year with a class set of the novel Wonder.
This novel by R.J. Palacio has relatable themes of kindness, compassion, and empathy, along with anti-bullying, which is a unit we cover at the beginning of the year. The novel uses humor and relatable characters to emphasize the importance of being kind. It illustrates how one student can have a positive impact on a school and make a change in the world. Last year we made a positive impact wall in our classroom. Each student wrote their favorite positive quote on a brick for the wall. This year we will build on this idea and use some of the precepts discussed in the book.
