My Students

Students in our school are below grade level for reading. While we would qualify for Title I by state requirements, our district has too many schools with higher needs than ours, so we do not receive the additional funding. Our students want to become better readers, but we need ways to support their literacy growth.

The students in our school are half military.

The constant moving means that there will be gaps in their education that I will be trying to fill and there will be advanced students that need something extra. The rest of the students are from low socioeconomic status and face a variety of challenges of their own.

My Project

The book Wonder is a great way to help kids talk about differences, bullying, acceptance, kindness, and many other issues that 5th graders experience. This book allows students to discuss these issues in a safe context.

I have been reading the book aloud, but we dig deep into the character development, vocabulary, setting, and other features of the book.

This is hard without the students having a copy to refer back to. Having enough copies for the class to use, not only makes my job easier, but it also increases engagement. When kids have books that they enjoy reading they are more likely to read.
