I teach at a large, urban, public school with almost 1,030 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with the majority of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools with a very active military influence.
I teach future authors, members of the military, doctors, teachers, engineers, and productive future contributors to society.
I teach students who are always asking why and ready to take learning to the next step.
My Project
Inspired by If/Then Collection of images, STEM History | Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation & Communication by Elizabeth Wheeler. Students will share their interests and look at possible career options for them in the future because anything is possible when we set our minds and have exposure as young children. We will bring those dreams to life by having students in STEM posters that will hang in the hallways and classroom. We'll use the the posters, books, and supplies for coding our female STEM heroes as well. Students at home will be able to send in their photos and posters will be made for them as well. Learning about past and present STEMinists and ensuring that we continue to enhance knowledge for women in STEM careers. STEM history and comparing past present and future STEM careers.
Minorities in STEM, especially female minorities, are underserved and underrepresented.
Bringing knowledge of STEM careers to young children is a great way to motivate them to continue on the path of becoming innovators.
This project was inspired by Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation & Communication through Video Production project as well as the if We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists project and will start with featured women, Elizabeth Wheeler and Aisha Lawrey.
