Ms. Davis from Queens NY is requesting Supplies through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Women and Hands-on Science

My students need science materials, such as a stethoscope, density blocks and DVDs, to perform labs and to conduct science experiments in the classroom.

My Students

A woman in science is a wonderful and powerful thing. Having the tools needed to achieve her goals in the classroom are just as powerful. I don't want my students to be at a disadvantage because the budget no longer allots money for classroom supplies. Science can and should be fun!

We are one of four all-girl public schools in New York City, with students ranging from 6th to 12th grades.

These girls come from low income areas where the high school graduation rates are on a decline. Our goal is to empower these young ladies by providing them with a strong education and to help them realize that college is more than just a dream, it is their future. My students are motivated and dedicated young women. They love to be engaged in science and exploratory activities. I want to give them every advantage that I can to do so.

My Project

I am requesting supplies that my students and I will use to make our lessons more engaging, creative, and fun. For our physics of sound unit, I am requesting stethoscopes, so my students can experiment with hearing sound in liquids. The cotton tips are for those gooey agents that my budding scientists may not want on their hands. Thermometers will help when we study units on heat, thermal energy, and weather. I ordered the streak collection, mineral kit, and geology video library so students can "dig" into rocks and minerals. Density blocks will be used to physically calculate the density and volume of different objects while the friction board will be used to demonstrate how different surfaces have different amounts of friction. The convection apparatus will be an awesome way for students to view currents and finally, two demo books so that I as a teacher can motivate my students at the beginning of each lesson by demonstrating how science can be fun!

My students are part of an all girls 6-12 school in urban New York.

Many of these girls are forced to grow up quicker than they should, due to stigmas and/or family obligations. They will see many of their friends incarcerated, become pregnant and drop out of school, or worse. For many of them, education will be their only escape from a world full of poverty and crime. I want to demonstrate to these girls that science can be fun, and yes, they can achieve and exceed even their own expectations!
