Help me give my students the knowledge of sales through the use of a real cash register and basic work related skills that will be transferable to life after graduation.
I teach in an urban, public school district which educates close to 7,000 students of all ability levels. Our high school is one of three in the district and houses over 900 students 7th through 12th grade, with each student receiving a free breakfast and lunch.
Our Life Skills program is comprised of 45 students ranging from 12 - 21 years old, who grow from teenagers into young adults right in front of our eyes.
It is our responsibility within the school to foster an environment where they want to come to school each day. Within our program we like to create various hands on lessons and activities to keep our students motivated. Each of these lessons have to be tailored to the needs of each individual student. A few years ago we were able to create a startup coffee cafe to service our faculty and staff, which was a huge hit! It is my goal to continue to grow in order to help our students be successful in the ever-changing world we live in.
My Project
The students in the life skills program are enrolled in a full time classroom and there is a need for vocational training within the program. The students currently run a coffee cafe out of my classroom for all faculty and staff within the building. We are looking to bring the coffee cafe into the 21st century with a real cash register.
It is important to integrate hands on learning so students stay engaged, and are eager to work and learn.
The storage containers will be used to keep muffins fresh, and for longer shelf time. We are using a peculator from our old home economics room that is in dire need of upgrades.
