My class is full of 24 eager and energetic 4th graders! We live in a rural community, but the backgrounds, lives and interests are entirely unique to each student.
Choice and responsibility are vital facets of my classroom and I believe it's pivotal for my students to develop and grow these skills throughout our time together.
We currently have about 3 "special" seats in my classroom besides the our standard chairs, including a couple stools and an arm-chair. The thing is, those little guys LOVE those different seating options. Most all of them desire one of those various special seats, but I'm amazed at their ability to self-regulate, problem-solve and work together to come with equitable solutions in our classroom family. I am truly proud of them. However, I feel bad that there is currently not more to offer them. I would love to be able to provide more students with more choices. They deserve it.
That's where this project comes in!
My Project
Every student is a unique individual who craves a sense of empowerment and control over their education and environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their locations and positions as needed with various seating options.
Flexible seating promotes choice and responsibility within my students.
With enhanced freedom, comes enhanced responsibility. Flexible seating allows students to be shown that as they are given more choices, more is expected out of them. From where they choose to sit and how they choose to work, students are able to learn and practice life lessons of problem-solving and making self-responsible choices to best help themselves and their education.
Flexible seating options will benefit all of the students in my classroom. The multiple seating options will allow my students the opportunity to choose a learning condition that best meets their needs. The wobble and balance chairs will allow the extra energy of some students to be converted into positive productivity. The choice of the seating options I chose are all easily mobile and can be moved throughout different locations of my classroom. I have tested the flexible seating options I have chosen here with many of my students this school. I have grown to see that these alternative seating methods are not just a luxury but a necessity for our students!
Just as our students are constantly evolving, the classroom environment needs to be able to constantly evolve as well!
