My students walk into their classrooms every day with the odds stacked against them, but still they preserver. Many of them struggle to meet the grade level expectations in math, reading and writing. I teach students with a range of disabilities, including emotional/behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorders and specific learning disabilities.
Even with these challenges, they are full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day.
I teach at a Florida Title I school that has an extended reading day. Over 95 percent of our students receive free lunch. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
There’s an abundance of research about how harmful a sedentary lifestyle can be. Active sitting has been shown to make a positive impact on health and brain function. These wooble stools will allow students to move, without moving from their seats.
Research has shown that the “wobbling” stool motion can actually help a student focus.
For self-described fidgeters, rocking, swaying and even bouncing a bit, without leaving your chair, lets out energy that would otherwise distract you. This flexible seating options make the classroom a more dynamic learning environment. Students will adore being allowed to move around in their flexible seat and work around the room. Flexible seating means more time learning and collaborating, less day dreaming and pencil tapping.
