My school is in a diverse neighborhood in Queens, nestled in New York City. We focus on health and wellness and have started to take on work in deconstructing racism. The school serves grades pre-kindergarten through third grade students. We are a tight-knit school community, with administrators knowing most of the students as they grow physically and academically!
Our students need fun and developmentally appropriate activities and choices to foster and to enhance their love of learning at a young age.
While many of our students lack the opportunity to make their own choices outside of school, many attend after-school programs and Saturday programs because of the work schedules of their caretakers. Many of our students come from immigrant homes where English is not their first language. This has not hindered their enthusiasm and curiosities. They have questions and ideas but are always in need of resources for inspiration and reference.
My Project
Movement while learning helps learners learn - it's definitely true for myself, and I'm an adult! Sometimes, something as simple as having something to lean on or an avenue to move around a bit can make all the difference in comfort.
Flexibility to move on a wobble cushion can help strengthen core muscles and the repetitive movement as well as sensory feel of the cushions can help learners focus better on learning when their physical needs are better met.
The chair fidget bands provide a different outlet for those who need it, to have some sensory feedback and to be more comfortable while learning.
