Wobble, Wobble, Wiggle: My Students Need Flexible Seating Options!
My students need flexible seating options like balance balls and wobble seats. Sixth graders are still wiggly and thrive when they have the ability to pick different areas within the classroom.
Located in a small mountain town in southwest Colorado, my school serves approximately 550 middle school students in grades 5 to 8. Our goal has been and will continue to be to educate children and to prepare them with 21st century skills, despite the fact that a vast majority of our kids qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
One thing that has become very evident is the need for flexible seating within my classroom.
Students don’t want to sit in rows of individual desks isolated from each other, and they are very active and wiggly! My classroom thrives on collaboration and a commitment to developing social and emotional skills while working together so that each and every student succeeds. By offering my students different areas for seating, I am meeting their needs to wiggle and move about. I hope to maximize their learning potential.
My Project
Over and over again, I hear students saying they would love flexible seating options in their classrooms. I’m looking to make that a reality by adding wobble seats and yoga balls to two large tables. These items will replace traditional chairs and allow students to wiggle while they work. We know that not all students learn best by sitting still in traditional desks and chairs. The need for movement is important, and I’m not afraid to be a risk taker to bring that into my classroom. I hope you will find this idea important and know that the ball seats and stools which I am requesting will be cared for with love and lots of wiggles and giggles!
