Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work with eleven amazing students in a self-contained special education classroom. I have three different grade levels (2nd-4th) in my classroom. My students all follow different schedules throughout the day to meet all of their needs. Their schedules include all academic areas, social/emotional learning, specials, etc. My students have many sensory needs and are also learning to work independently to gain confidence in themselves academically, as well as socially. All of my students are working in different areas of the classroom throughout the day, independently and in small groups. This type of environment can be a sensory overload and distracting to some of the students.
My Project
Next school year, I will have the same students that I have this school year. As their teacher, this gives me time to reflect on what my students need and how I can improve their learning environment. Getting to know these eleven amazing individuals, I have reflected on things that they love in the classroom and how they learn best. We currently have one wobble chair in our classroom and everyday it is the hot topic of conversation. My students cannot wait to ask me, "can I use the wobble chair today?" when they walk through those doors every morning. We also have a trampoline in our classroom. While using the trampoline for our movement breaks, I have seen their focus and engagement increase afterwards.
These eleven children have special needs that impact their learning and the way they interpret the environment around them.
My hope is to give my students a classroom where they are able to wobble, bounce, stim, etc. while they are learning! I believe movement and sensory input/output is key for my students. This project will help my students receive movement while they are working to increase their focus.
Flexible seating not only allows my students to increase their focus throughout the day, but it also gives them a sense of responsibility. They will have to pick a seat that will work for them each day. They will take charge of their learning by picking a seat that will help them learn best! They will have to respect the space of others, keep themselves organized, and learn how to share their seats with each other.
