Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low income, 90% bilingual school district. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. They come to school each day ready to learn and succeed. Each year of teaching brings an exciting new group of students with mixed interests and abilities. Many of my students go home each night to families that do not speak English and need to translate to their families about their day, homework, etc. Often students in my class come in saying they have difficulty completing assignments at home because of lack of supplies and resources. I want to give my students all I can to help them succeed, because kids deserve it!
My Project
Flexible seating will allow my students to do their best work in a choice spot that fits their learning preference. Currently, my students sit in regular four-legged chairs during whole group instruction and during most independent time. The balance balls, lap desks, floor seats and wobble stools I am asking for in this project will allow students to have a learning environment that fits their needs. Students will be not only more engaged but comfortable at the same time.
Rather than trying to get children to sit still and stop figeting, we must design learning spaces that embrace children's movement and action as NECESSARY prerequisites for developing attention.
With these new flexible seating opportunities, my students will be able to concentrate better, stay more engaged and complete their work to the best of their ability.
