Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In August, 24 new wide-eyed Transitional Kindergarten students will come to my classroom. All of them will be 4 years old when they arrive and turn 5 in the first 3 months of school. Some will be coming to school for the first time.
Students at this age have lots of energy and love to learn.
It's important to support their need to move, yet balance that with an environment that ensures they have a great academic start to school.
My Project
TK students are capable of learning a surprising amount in the year before they start Kindergarten. This is one of the reasons I love teaching Transitional Kindergarten. My job is to teach them using the Kindergarten state standards, which includes beginning reading, writing and math skills, while still remembering they are energetic, active 5 year old children.
Wobble cushions will help my students remain focused on their studies, yet allow them the flexibility to move as they work.
A few months ago I borrowed wobble cushions from our school site occupational therapist for 2 students with Sensory Processing Disorders, SPD. (Wobble cushions are often used for children with Autism, SPD and ADHD.) To ensure these children were not singled out, all the kids in my class took turns using the cushions. Immediately I saw a difference in my students' ability to concentrate and stay focused. Standard school chairs are often hard and uncomfortable. The wobble cushions will give my students the option of more flexible seating while they learn and grow.
