My students need alternate seating in the classroom to allow them to be active during the day and find a space that they feel most comfortable in. We need wobble stools to help reach this goal!
My kindergarteners are active, kind, talented, and curious students who love to be independent and have opportunities to make their own choices.
My students live in a very low-income neighborhood that surrounds our small Title 1 school.
Some of our students live in low-income housing, several do not speak English at home, and others have already moved more than once in their young school careers. I want school to be a safe and stable place for my students to learn. They are very active students who love hands-on activities that allow them to move while learning.
My Project
Recently, I have noticed that my students have been asking to sit in different locations in our classroom during work time, including my rocking chair, on the floor, etc. I asked them why they enjoy sitting in these places better. They explained to me that it was more comfortable and they enjoyed being able to move while they are working (by means of rocking, bouncing their feet, stretching out, etc). We began experimenting with a few furniture items I had around my house. I brought in a stability ball, a small trampoline, and some small rocking chairs. I noticed a huge improvement in attention and behavior, but I do not have enough flexible seating for my students.
Research has shown that flexible seating in the classroom leads to healthier kids.
The new wobble stools will provide students with the choice of seating that will allow them to be comfortable and active. With an increase in attention problems in our schools, having the opportunity to be active in our classroom is very important. The new furniture will allow our students to be continuously active for the 6 hours that they are in our classroom each day. This will not limit them to being active only during PE and recess.
The wobble seats will give my students a disc that will allow them to move and wiggle while working, rather than traditional stationary chairs.
