My students need flexible seating. These 4 and 5 year old children will benefit from being able to wobble while they work or sit in non-traditional ways around the classroom!
Imagine walking to school as police vehicles rush by you. Imagine walking home and a fight between parents breaks out in front of you. Imagine moving every few months from one motel or apartment to the next. Imagine hearing gunshots on a regular basis as you go to sleep. Imagine living in a neighborhood known as "Drug Alley." This is the life my students live.
My students are bright, funny, talented, and often jaded because of the environment in which they live.
Their school zone is rife with drugs, crime, and poverty. We are the only school in our district where there is NOT one single-family home in the zone. The entire zone is full of apartments-many of which are daily/weekly rentals. We have 100% free meals, and many community outreach programs to get our students the services they need.
We are approximately 75% Hispanic, 20% African American, and 5% other. We have a large ELL population, a large homeless population, and a very high transiency rate. It is not uncommon for our school to be on lock-down because of police activity outside the doors of school.
Despite this, we work hard. We sing; we dance; we learn.
My Project
Many of our students have never been in a school setting prior to their first day of kindergarten. They have never held a pencil, cut with scissors, or even colored a picture, let alone sat in a chair at a table for six hours of the day. So many kindergarten students are excited to come to school the first day, but they dread going the second day. It can take months for them to adjust to sitting and learning. These flexible seating options will provide a way for my kids to feel more comfortable. I have crate seats, stools, and pillows in my classroom now, and students constantly argue over who gets to use them. When I combine those items I already have with this Donors Choose Project, I will have one amazing classroom with many ways for my kids to learn!
With this project my kids can sit on the floor, balance on balls, or wobble while they work!
The cushions will provide a soft seat as will the big chairs. I can just see my library now with kids sitting on the chairs and cushions reading and working and loving their "fun" classroom.
