I am fortunate enough to spend my days with a classroom full of 6 and 7 year olds. We live in Ohio, which a suburb of Dayton. My students are so full of excitement and curiosity, it is infectious. They love to listen to stories and do science experiments. They love to work together to solve problems in their math stations and write interesting stories during writing workshop. We love to be silly and laugh together.
I've been teaching for 11 years, and I have learned that most first graders need to move!
Sitting still at tables all day is definitely not developmentally appropriate, so I allow my students to sit in a way that is comfortable for them. One item that I have been wishing for are some wiggle stools to help with those little ones who work best by moving around.
My Project
First graders need to move! Their little bodies are full of excitement and energy and they work very hard to maintain their self-control during the school day. These wobble stools will allow them to wobble out some of those wiggles while learning and working in our classroom.
I also believe it is important to allow the students choice in where to work.
Some students prefer the floor, some like to stand, some like to be curled up in a small, cozy corner. These wobble stools will allow even more flexibility in their choices of where to work. Some students need constant movement to maintain a strong level of focus, and those students should have a choice that works for them.
