Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an ever-growing group of now 8 girls and 8 boys. I am blessed to have a very loving group that is always eager to help and learn.
My students have very varied abilities and come from many different ethnic backgrounds.
I was hired a few weeks into the school year to relieve overcrowding in the other classrooms, welcoming the influx of students coming from Hurricane Maria evacuees. My classroom steadily welcomes 1-2 new students a month!
I have 5 English language learners, and 4 students receiving academic interventions to help identify possible disabilities. We are a Title I school, and most of my students receive free lunch. Most of my students live in a single parent setting, with grandparents, or with other family members. Parent involvement in my classroom is very low.
Above all, I’ve realized that what my students need most is someone who cares. Finding resources to help them connect with the lessons and make them comfortable in the classroom would not only help them learn, but would also help them feel cared for and impact their self esteem greatly!
My Project
It is so hard for some of my Kindergartners to stay properly seated through even the shortest lessons. Standing, walking, and dangerously wobbling in their standard chairs constantly, also creates a big distraction from learning.
Alternative seating has helped other teachers tremendously, I'd love to give my kids the same opportunities to succeed.
My students always wonder about the Wobble Chairs when we visit my colleagues classroom. I am a new teacher, and came in with practically no resources and we needed so many things! Thanks to some amazing donors, and company matches, who have funded my most needed materials, my bare classroom is coming together so nicely!
It pains me to have to tell my students, who already have so much less than most, that those are luxuries we cannot afford, YET. I want to give these kids all the luxuries they won't have at home. My littles are no different and no less deserving than their school mates, I'd even say they're more deserving because they've been through so much and persevere! I would love to be able to provide them with these commodities. These Wobble Chairs would improve classroom behavior, and give us that final touch to be just like our peers in the other settled classrooms!
