Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from low income families and all have varying disabilities, which range from Autism to Specific Learning Disabilities. My students do not let their disabilities get in the way of their education. Although the average age of my students is about 9 years old, many of them are still struggling to read. One of our classroom goals is to improve their reading and comprehension skills by the end of the academic school year.

Every single child can learn; although they might learn things a little bit differently.

Their individual personalities and abilities bring so much into the classroom setting. All of my students spend a majority of their time away from their grade level peers and in a Special Day Class setting. They are able to work with their grade level peers during science, social students, music, and physical education.

The future goal for each of these students is to ultimately transition into their least restrictive environment. My students come to school every day eager to learn. They are hardworking, excited to learn, and always motivate their peers to be the best they can be!

My Project

Differentiated seating and instruction is important for all students, especially students with special needs. My students are currently working on inflatable furniture, desks, surf desks, and comfortable chairs. My students are encouraged to work together and collaborate and having different seating options will allow groups to move together around the room comfortably.

When my students are given the freedom to move around the room and work together, amazing things happen.

Students that had difficulty in a certain subject were able to move around the room and gain assistance from peers. My students are able to focus more when they are given the freedom to work in different areas in the classroom.

I have a clear set of rules and expectations for my students involving flexible seating and they know how they need to behave in each section of the room.

Most of my seating is light weight and students are able to move them around the room to work with different groups of students/teachers.

I would love to give my students some wobble stools. My students will be able to move these items around the room and can easily engage with other students. I have a few students with ADHD who will benefit the most from this because they are constantly moving around. They have tried out the wobble stools in another teacher's classroom and worked well on them. I would love to have wobble stools in my classroom to help my students learn!

My students are already improving with the flexible seating currently available in my classroom and I know these additional seating options will allow them to thrive this year!
