Imagine creativity, spontaneity, drive, excitement, and freedom within a classroom. What would this look like? How would the kids be acting? Where would their energy be focused? I hear these words and I think of the students that come to the music classroom every day excited to learn and make music. Music gives our children the tools to create, try new things, move, play, and socialize; and the students in my classroom are excited about these opportunities.
"We'll sing and be happy because we're all here together again!" The students greet each other with this song at the beginning of every class period, and they sing it with content smiles on their faces.
For many of my students, a school is a welcoming place where they can feel safe. Over 50% of my students are below poverty line. Many come to school with trauma either in their past or in their presence. Weekly I hear of students being entered into the foster system, moving to new homes or homeless shelter, not eating supper, and not able to sleep because of family life. But these students show such resiliency. They enter my room and overcome so many obstacles in order to learn.
My Project
The music classroom is an exciting room full of creativity, sound, and movement; however, for many of my students, the sounds and movement can quickly become overwhelming, creating sensory needs and their bodies slowly loose regulation.
Providing wobble seats for my students will help children focus as their bodies feel the need to move.
Sitting on the wobble chairs following a stimulating activity will help students find their core and calm their bodies through subtle movement. Students will then have more success learning music theory, vocabulary, and history. I believe this will also help students find success calming themselves after the transition from their classroom into the music classroom.
