Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students come to me with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn mathematics. By the end of third grade, students are expected to master multiplication and division facts to 100, solve word problems with all operations, and understand many concepts related to fractions. One of the biggest challenges that I face is getting students to meet grade level expectations when their learning environment is not adequate to meet their needs.
My students are all individuals from different backgrounds and with different types of learning abilities.
Let me introduce you to my classroom! I am a third grade math teacher in a low income school. I teach three math periods throughout the day with ninety minute blocks and seventy students transitioning in and out of my classroom. Some of my students are English Language Learners, special education students, and highly capable and gifted students. Student ability levels range anywhere from intensive, strategic, and benchmark. Approximately 48 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am asking for two adjustable wobble stools as a form of flexible seating in my classroom. Expecting students to sit still in a chair for a ninety-minute block is a big expectation, especially for eight and nine year olds. This is something that students are expected to do on a daily basis. Something as simple as sitting on a chair becomes an enormous task for students that are already at a disadvantage in their educational career. Students are all expected to meet grade level expectations, no matter what level they were at in the beginning of third grade. It is up to me, their math teacher to meet every single students’ need.
The ability to move while learning in a classroom is ideal for many of my students.
Their busy bodies make it harder for them to focus on their school work when they have to sit on a chair for a whole class period. I would like to provide as many different seating options for my students to meet their individual needs. With the help of the wobble stools students will stay engaged in their learning but also be able to move continuously throughout the block if needed.
