I have two classes of high energy, enthusastic, curious 2nd graders. They love to read and create their own stories. We love to play Kahoot and use the iPads. I often allow the kids to choose "their best learning spot" during the short time that we spend together each day and it can very entertaining to see the positions that the kids find comfortable.
All of my students are enrolled in our school's Dual Immersion program which means that they spend half of their school day focussing on Language Arts with me and the other half of the day in Spanish with their Spanish teacher.
My Project
One of our favorite times of the school day in our classroom is our "seat choice time." This is a time where I allow my students to choose the spot in the classroom where they would like to work. I love how this time encourages my students to practice self-awareness and responsibility. They love the opportunity to have the choice to either stand at their desk, work on the rug, sit on a cushion, or a crate seat. I have found that seat choice time is the time where my students are the most productive and engaged in their learning.
This past week, our wonderful school counselor was kind enough to allow me to borrow a few wobble chairs to use for some of my most wiggly students.
What a difference they made! The wobble chairs allowed these kids a safer way (meaning I wasn't constantly worrying that they would hurt themselves by tipping back in their chairs or desks!) to squirm and also helped them to be more focussed on their work. I was so excited by these results and I would love to be able to get some wobble chairs to keep in our classroom permanently so my energetic students can continue to enjoy the benefits they bring.
