My 5th graders come from a very diverse neighborhood area in Belmont, NC. My school serves students in 2nd through 5th grade within an academically rigorous & supportive educational environment. We are consistently a top-performing school within both our district and state. Even so, we struggle to obtain resources necessary to maintain our commitment to excellence.
My students, like the students filling many classrooms, have extensively differing abilities but are all developing a love of learning and, specifically, of reading.
My Project
My 5th grade class has positively fallen in love with book clubs. We have completed two full rotations of book clubs and, already, students are positively begging to see what they will be reading next. High interest texts paired with in-depth peer conversations about their reading are taking students' reading skills & enthusiasm to a whole new level! We are deepening comprehension skills, vocabulary, and confidence. Possibly even more importantly, though, this is work that my students are pumped up about doing!
Fantasy books allow students a unique escape into a world ripe with imagination and tons of complex features to discuss and enjoy!
These high-interest titles support the work that my students are begging to do in the classroom. They put titles that students want to read immediately into their hands so that we can delve right in and deepen our reading skills & knowledge. ...And, as an added bonus, we get to do it in the magical worlds created by some of the best children's authors out there!
