Middle School Students are considered to be a tough age group. They are not only learning who they are and what they want to become, but they are also learning responsibility and how to balance work from all 6 classes. At this age level, students are wanting to b engaged in learning. As teachers, we are competing with technology and social media.
In order to gain our students attention, we have to get them up and moving and allow them to be able to express themselves.
Working with them one on one or presenting a "hands on lesson", is the best way to gain their attention.
My students also come from low-income homes, stacking the odds against them even more. Students come to school looking for a safe environment, lacking materials needed for learning. Our school is k-12 consisting of approximately 700 students. Our middle school contains 100 of those 700.
My Project
Geometry is the toughest strand of math for a student to understand. In order for me to be able to properly teach them and get them to understand, they need more hands on materials to use.
Geo-Mirrors, 3D shapes and magna tiles will give students a hands-on visual model to help understand difficult concepts.
The geo-mirrors will be used in 8th grade to help with rotations, reflections and translations. The 3D shapes will be used in 7th grade to help with volume and surface area of shapes and the magna tiles will be used to show nets of 3D shapes.
