Ms. Garner from Memphis TN is requesting other through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a microscope, handwash, distilled water, gel packs, and slides to observe germs on common surfaces and the importance of cleanliness.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Similar to a secret agent or the anonymous voice on Mission Impossible, I like to challenge my students: "Try to leave without a trace." Then the challenge begins for my students to demonstrate a high level of cleanliness!
My students represent a unique population: students that were referred to our school from various schools throughout the city for behavior and/or academic concerns.
My school provides a unique, non-traditional environment that offers classroom guidance and character group sessions weekly. We also provide smaller classroom settings to better cater to our students' individual needs. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in service learning trips twice a month to recognize the importance of serving the community. As a counselor in this unique environment, I have the grand opportunity to know my students and their needs in depth. As a result, I have searched for the donations and services of agencies, such as dental cleanings, counseling, and other agencies when needed. I use creativity with them through music, role play, art, and other hands-on materials to address topics such as self-esteem, and self-control.
The materials provided through Donors Choose will allow my students to recognize the importance of exercising proper hygiene on a daily basis. They will actually see the germs that could be present on common surfaces such as bathroom sinks, door handles, and on hands after improper hand washing. They will also understand basic hygiene can prevent the spread of diseases. These resources and lessons will affect their attitudes toward cleanliness for life. After the lessons, I know the students will have a new respect for the phrase "Without a Trace." They will also get a chance to reap the benefit of community service. As recipients of this donation, they will understand they are responsible to continue to serve others as well. I have always felt one of the biggest ways to return a favor is by helping others in need. This is a perfect opportunity for them to understand this concept.
In closing, this project will greatly benefit our program because it will serve two purposes.
The students will better understand why we stress demonstrating proper hygiene in daily living. Also, They will understand the charge of serving the community.
