Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The best thing I can hear as a reading teacher is "Are there more of these?" Finding that "just right" book for each student is an adventure and witnessing the excitement they have when they finally come across one is immensely rewarding.
I am a Reading Intervention teacher at a diverse Title 1 middle school in Texas; the majority of my students are reluctant readers struggling with on-level reading due to various reasons (English Language Learner, learning disability, etc.).
My goal is to help my students grow as readers in a safe and encouraging environment. My students love to sprawl around the room as they absorb new books from our class library. Some students are not exposed to many books at home and school is one of their few opportunities to engage with new books.
My Project
I strive to create a classroom where students feel comfortable and willing to complete any activity.
Basic supplies like clipboards, markers, staplers, and lead will help our classroom function in a smoother, more efficient manner.
My classroom is set up with flexible seating that my students have really enjoyed this year. Students have many options to sit, read, and complete their work whether that be tables and chairs, the futon, saucer chairs, a bar height table and stools, or pillows and cushions on the floor. Students choose spots around the room where they work best- clipboards would help those students who choose non-traditional seats complete their work more comfortably.
The staplers and markers will help my students work more efficiently as they work to put together their Interactive Reader Notebooks. We currently have one stapler that is passed around the room. Having additional staplers will allow groups of students to use a stapler faster, especially when a stapler inevitably jams and students are waiting for me to fix it. The anchor chart markers will allow me to create more anchor charts for my students to refer to as we progress through the year. We create a lot of anchor charts together and my students get a lot of use out of the sentence stems on the anchor charts as they write and have discussions.
Many of my students dislike using "regular" pencils, whether it's due to sensory issues or preconceived notions about the comfort of "regular" pencils, and will only complete work if they have a mechanical pencil to use. However, their pencils eventually run out of lead and they generally do not have any more. With a class supply of lead, this issue will cease to be an issue in our classroom and students can be successful!
