Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students not only in my classroom but in our school are so excited to come to school every day to learn. Some of our students are up at 5 am just to make sure they make it into school on time to get their breakfast. This may be their first full meal since leaving school the day before. No matter how exhausted they are, they are still so motivated and positive in the classroom. Most of our students speak more than one language and even translate for their parents to communicate with their teachers.
The amazing 3rd, 4th and 5th graders of my self-contained class include scholars with diverse educational needs.
These students are ENL learners, have intellectual disabilities and have emotional needs.
We want to be able to give every student everything they need to be successful inside and outside the classroom. They also need to feel that they are given every opportunity that every other student is given. No matter their background or economic status.
I am hoping to inspire and motivate my students every day. I'm excited to be more creative and give my students all the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
During guided reading time, I work with a small group of students and listen to their reading, provide guidance for their reading, enhance their language, and assess their comprehension. The small group atmosphere helps me facilitate meaningful conversation about shared books, and also gives all students time to voice their thoughts and questions.
Since I also use this time to teach differentiated phonics and reading comprehension skills, I need easel stand, charts, rings and new letters to help increase their reading skills.
Currently, I just write on a small whiteboard and hold it up, but my students have to strain to see what I wrote. It makes reading time frustrating for them and me. We would love a tabletop easel and pocket charts (for sight words and vocabulary) so that every student can see easily and learn equitably!
Students also need flexible seating since my students are special needs. They need choices of how and where to sit to focus and do their best work.
