Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a NASA Explorer school focusing on math, science, and technology. It is a Title I school with most of our students receiving free or reduced-price meals. Our students are truly diverse from a variety of cultures.
My students are curious, creative and spontaneous.
In recent years, preparing our students for the technology-focused future has been my school’s top priority. I am looking for ways to spark my students’ interest in computer science and provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My students have been working on basic coding skills using computers. With your generous help, this grant will enable them to program and see these robots come alive right before their eyes!
My Project
As careers increasingly demand computer skills, basic knowledge of coding and other such skills are becoming a necessity. What can teachers do to spark more interest in computer science in our young students? As an elementary school teacher, I am looking for a more effective way to engage my 4th grade students and introduce technology skills through the interactive robots.
We still need a set of 7 Kindles to command 7 Wonder Workshop Dash robots we just received through a district grant.
The experience of programming these robots via Kindles would reinforce the students' understanding of fundamental concepts in computer science. In addition, students will practice other 21st century skills, such as collaboration, analytical reasoning, critical thinking skills and problem solving skills. My students will work in teams to complete a series of challenges in the Wonder Workshop program. They eventually will create their own programs for the robots to complete tasks.
