My students are in third-fifth Grade.
They come from diverse backgrounds, both military and civilian. Although we are not a Title I school, we feel they still deserve the best that we can offer.
Therefore, staying at the forefront of technology is important to us. Since extra funding is not available to us, we depend upon the generosity of donors. My students thrive and are hungry for new challenges and a way to display, enrich, and expand on their imaginations. By giving them the tools to engineer computers and learn to write code, we are giving them an opportunity to have an edge in a growing and competitively global environment.
My Project
In our technology driven world, more and more is expected of our students. Utilizing the Kano Computer Kit, my students will not only learn to construct a computer, but will also learn to write codes.
This form of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has many cross curricular applications and the potential to involve all the multiple intelligences. It can virtually open doors to a neoteric programmer’s imagination!
It is my intention to start with a group project that will teach my students how to construct a computer. While doing so, they will look into a computer's brain. They will learn the rules and how to take control by learning the languages and logic of coding.
Once the Kano computer is built and has been explored, my students will be given a project called Sonic Pi. Here they will learn how to write text based code to produce a music track. The goal is not to play music, but to create their own. Hence, experiencing ownership and pride in their conceptions.
Exciting a student and keeping attention are hard tasks for any educator to undertake.
It is our job to guide and inspire our students to accomplish more than just application. Instead they must be encouraged and free to dream, be innovative, and to create! Kano can provide the skills my students need to advance beyond expectations. It is with your help that I can start them down that path.
