Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

96% of our students receive free lunch and 86% are English language learners. Even with those challenges 32 students have achieved great academic success. The Honor Society is a group of students from grades 4 and 5. They were given membership based on their high achievements in reading and math. I am the coordinator who facilitates their meetings, community service opportunities, and presentations. This is the first year of the National Honor Society for Elementary Schools and we are proud to be a part of it. With so many challenges that these students face living in a high-needs community, it is important that their achievements are acknowledged.

Out of the many clubs and teams that our students could participate in, our Honor Society is the only organization that volunteers. At a recent visit to the Veterans Affairs Hospital, we handed out letters and cards to veterans. Our members shook hands with men and women who have served in Vietnam, Persian Gulf and Iraq. The students handed out sugar-free candy canes to ex-soldiers who have been wounded and are in need of care. Some tears were shed and hugs were given. The students felt honored to be in the presence of heroes and the vets appreciated the time that was spent with them. The students walked away understanding the true meaning of service.

With each community service that the Honor Society does, we are representing our school. Our school has a newspaper that goes out to more than 660 students and their parents. This newspaper highlights the achievements of our students and showcases the work that they do in school and in the community. The Honor Society does not have a camera! We want to be highlighted and acknowledged within the school for the wonderful things that we do outside of the school. With a small digital camera, students and leaders of the Honor Society can take photographs, have them put in our school's newspaper and share them with friends and family. With a flash drive, we would be able to save those images.

It is important that students recognize the importance of giving back. Students that attend our school in the future will not have to wonder about the history of our school and the Alpha Chapter of the Honor Society.
