Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with special education students in an urban school district. We work together on phonics skills to help them learn how to read. My students are diagnosed with Learning Disabilities, Autism, Other Health Impairments, or Emotional Disturbances.
I love seeing the reading growth that they make throughout the year and to know that their lives are changing in a positive manner.
Having students in middle school come to me and tell me that they are now realizing that there are words on signs in the community and that they can order off a menu on their own for the first time makes me smile when coming to work each day.
My Project
I teach in an urban school district and many of my students have significant trauma or poverty issues. Many of them are reluctant readers and come to my class with skills at a 2nd-grade level at best.
Providing a space where they can sit in comfortable chairs, and have access to some incentives for reading better allows them to practice the phonics skills that they are lacking.
My students know that they struggle with reading and often tell me that they hate to read. As the year goes on and they learn the skills necessary to read independently I love watching them find comfy areas in the room to curl up and read a book. Through this project, I would like to create more of those spaces so that they are not fighting to be the first one to the comfy rotation.
