This will be my first year teaching at my current school with 2nd graders. These students live in a low income area, so it's the little things that go on in the classroom that they really enjoy. I hope I can make a change in their lives this year. Since I do not know these students yet (the first day of school is in late August) I would love to start with a nice area for them all to gather around to connect with one another from day one.
I would love to see my kiddos flourish with excitement to learn this upcoming year!
They would be so appreciative of all of the help, I just know it!
My Project
This classroom rug will provide a space to share and connect with one another, and at the same time, it will provide a space to learn and gain knowledge. My students come from a low income neighborhood and every little thing that goes on in the classroom doesn't go unnoticed. If we had a classroom rug to gather on and around, the students would feel like they have a space and a purpose in my classroom.
I want to make the students feel comfortable and welcome in this environment.
I know that I can achieve this through obtaining a rug for them to sit on and around. We will use this rug for many different things such as: choice time (they may sit here to read quietly each day), direct instruction (I love having all of the students in one area so they feel part of a group), and brain breaks (this rug will go in front of the smartboard in our room, so if we need to shake out the wiggles, we have a spot to do so).
This project will help my kiddos feel like they have a space to not only share things about themselves, but to connect with other students and learn new content. This project will provide so much for these kiddos, much more than a rug, it will provide a sense of belonging and community.
