My students experience their home lives in many different ways. Some are fortunate to have a room in their own home while others are moving from one place to another looking for a couch to sleep on. Many live in two-bedroom apartments sharing rooms with their siblings and cousins.
No matter their circumstance, these students deserve the high-quality education that they have been promised.
Some of my students are lucky enough to have their own devices and the ability to connect to the internet while others are still in the process of acquiring district-provided devices and hotspots.
Over the course of the last few years, I have begun to create and edit my own instructional videos. My students began calling it O'Reilly Science Vlogs. It began with a smartphone taped to a basket. Recently I acquired a camera, tripod, and some editing software. The final pieces we need are backgrounds, lighting, and a good microphone.
With a green screen, we can be anywhere in our instructional videos.
Think of O'Reilly Science Vlogs meets the Magic School Bus. With the proper tools, we could be inside of a molecule, a cell, or the Earth exploring the content in a fun and exciting way.
Now, more than ever our students need to be excited to be able to sit through three to five minutes of video instruction. Teachers are competing with social media, video games, and the most recent good weather.
