Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I teach live in an urban community. 90% of the student population is eligible for free or reduced lunch at our elementary school. Each year the faculty and staff, try to actively engage our student population in their learning. Many students struggle with reading, and there is a lack of motivation to persevere.
My goal is to help instill a love for learning, specifically reading, within my students.
With over 800 students attending this school we have a very diverse population. Our students come from an array of cultural backgrounds, spanning from all around the world. A large population of our school community speaks more than one language. This is a Title 1 School. Many students lack resources at home to support their learning.
My Project
In our current classroom, we do not have a classroom rug. We have foam puzzle piece mats that I have purchased a few years ago. Unfortunately, the students must squish together in order for everyone to meet in this spot in our classroom. It can be difficult for students to have a comfortable spot to sit with their learning materials.
By having a new classroom rug, it will be able to provide sufficient space for all children throughout the school day.
Although it is just one space in our classroom, it can be utilized in so many different ways. I enjoy bringing students to this area for read aloud time, centers, and when we are learning a new topic together as an entire class. It can be very difficult for young students to stay at their desk for an entire school day. Having another space to sit, learn and enjoy learning would be beneficial to all students.
This classroom material, will be used for many years to come. I believe by providing a new classroom rug to the students that will be excited for this time during our school day. It can even be a spot to enjoy a book from our classroom library. By having enough space for all students to sit with their learning materials, they will be able to focus better!
