Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school advocates for the rights of students and effectively engages English learners and accommodates students with emotional and traumatic needs. District wide, we have limited funding for supplies and academic materials. All of our students receive free lunch. Most of my first graders come from immigrant families where English is their second language.
Everyday, my students come to school eager to learn and thrive, working hard to make good choices.
I have an energetic, engaging and vibrant class of beautiful first graders from diverse ethnic groups and low-income backgrounds.
Our class will celebrate many milestones throughout this year like learning to read and write, losing a first tooth and making new friends. As their teacher, my goal is to find resources that will help my students feel confident in their fundamental reading, writing, computing and exploring skills.
Children are more engaged in learning when lessons are relevant to them. We must allow them to explore, take risks and see what happens.
My Project
Recently, my students asked if they can have more table space in order to explore and learn from our science learning centers. Unfortunately, our old, wobbly, rusted, traditional desks come in pairs which do not give enough space for our children to spread their science experiments out and explore hands-on. Currently, our tables make us sit so tightly and our children look overcrowded bumping each others elbows everyday. We wish to have the most basic necessity which is three sturdy tables to learn in a more productive way without bothering our neighbors next to us. It's also difficult for our children to take their tests without peeking since we're sitting so close to one another. We would also like a beanbag for us to sit comfortably in order to read in our classroom library.
Every child functions, thinks and works differently; thus, they would like to be able to move around in their class and find a comfortable spot to sit to read, write, compute math and especially, explore science.
