My Students

I teach in a small town on the Canadian border. My class is part of a K-12 school within a tight-knit community. My students love to read and are eager to get their hands on new and beloved books alike.

My students love delving into novels.

While we spend a lot of time pacing our way through our reading textbook, my students enjoy picking up a novel so much more. They are able to ask questions, make predictions, and see connections about elements in our novels because they more involved and interested than with stories in our textbook. Their perseverance to finish novels as well as their dedication to helping each other understand features of each book we read is a gift to see in such young people. I look forward to every book we crack together.

My Project

Currently, we are borrowing another school's class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. My students love it and I hope to use the book and curriculum for many years to come.

We use Harry Potter to talk about text features like labels and captions as well as literary elements like genre and cause and effect.

With their own copy, students will be able to follow along with the reading, reread sections they want to delve into further, and cite quotes from the book as evidence statements in their essays. I will be able to continue to use curriculum to support the book and fully implement a novel study.

While these seem like simple tasks, I do believe that implementing book studies is very important to lifelong learning. Helping students learn to ask questions of their book, finish a book completely, and get excited about a series, such as the Harry Potter series, will help them develop a greater love and need to read.
