Wipe On, Wipe Off!
My students need "white boards"(also known as dry erase boards) and markers to meet academic and social/emotional needs.
Do you remember volunteering an answer in school and it was the wrong answer? You probably felt embarrassed and turned as red as a tomato! Couple that with learning a new language and being worried about pronouncing the word wrong! Your hand would never go up in the air!
I teach 28 amazing 5th grade students.
The majority of my class is learning English as a second language. Speaking is the last level of second language acquisition. Language learners often feel embarrassed about their accent or they feel uncomfortable speaking in front of groups.
Having whiteboards in the class will allow my students to participate and have their "voice" heard through writing or drawings. This will allow all my students to participate and show me their knowledge on a daily basis!
The whiteboards (and whiteboard accessories) could be used across the curriculum every day!
These classroom materials will boost confidence levels and encourage conversations about learning Students that are proficient in English can help the language learners label their sketches or diagrams. English dominant students will also benefit from these materials by showing their work ("showing their thinking") when solving math problems!
My project is important because these children are working hard every day to become proficient in academics and a new language!
They work twice as hard as the average student and never complain!
