This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are exposed to several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning, knowing that in the future I will be needing their art skills, problem-solving skills, engineering and math skills, and science and discovery skills that will help our community combat any challenges.
Help me provide winter clothing and winter gears for our students during winter school reopening.
They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience in school.
My Project
Just getting to school during winter time without proper warm clothing can be a challenge. Improving educational attainment is vital if the goal of eradicating child poverty in a generation is to be met, but children growing up in poverty are rarely asked how this impacts on their school life.
Coats, and winter gear for students in need play a vital element and are an important part to make each student in my class feel confident, good, and safe to attend school especially during the winter season.
Though a new coat, winter gear, and uniforms won’t cure all the hardships of a child -giving the gift of warmth gives children the opportunity to be outside when it’s cold, make it to school in chilly weather, and feel the positive psychological effects of owning a brand new coat. Let us help each scholar bundle up this winter season.
