My students need these 14 pairs of snowshoes for our new winter physical education and Adventure Learning programs.
Snowshoeing is a fun outdoor experience that integrates healthy, low impact exercise with the beauty of a winter walk outdoors. Living in beautiful northern Michigan where winter weather makes snowshoeing readily available, students will experience, some for the first time, this unique activity!
Our school prides itself in being on the cutting edge when it comes to curriculum, teaching practices, and technology integration.
With 375+ students, age 8 to 12, we are situated in northern Michigan where winter weather offers a unique opportunity to extend this 'cutting edge' approach to physical education and Adventure Learning! Our older students are already exposed to this, albeit on a limited basis, through our annual Winter White Out Adventure Learning program in early February. There is definitely a need for all of our children to experience snowshoeing each year. Because of where we live, many students partake in outdoor activities such as canoeing/kayaking, hunting, fishing, and hiking, but most don't get out much in the winter. We believe that because many students are outdoor-minded, they may extend the school snowshoeing experience beyond what they are exposed to at school.
Due to its outdoor recreation and fitness benefits, snowshoeing is one of the fastest growing winter sports. It's easy to get started as there is no learning curve. It is a fun, healthy, low-impact outdoor activity that enables adults and children to explore the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Chinook Snowshoes is a leading manufacturer of lightweight aluminum snowshoes. The Chinook brand is recognized as a leader in snowshoeing participation via community partnerships, and access programs on public and private lands. We will use Winter Fit for Kids, ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), an industry accredited snowshoe fitness program, that has successfully communicated the physiological and fitness attributes of snowshoeing. FIT Our school athletic fields are convenient for teaching snowshoeing. Nearby are national forest and state park trails that provide wonderful opportunities for this 'cutting edge' approach to physical education and Adventure Learning.
Donations to this project will create great opportunities for physical education and Adventure Learning during a time in the school year when 'cabin fever' can set in.
This plan will be used to encourage more physical activity in children when they traditionally are less active. By encouraging students to be more active, and providing the means to do this during school, we hope that all who participate will realize lifelong benefits!Read More
