Help me give my students winter boots so that they are able to walk to school during winter months. This will keep them in school and engaged.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an ESL teacher in Bridgeport, CT. My students are English Language Learners. Nearly all of my students have been in the United States for less than a year. One hundred percent of the student population qualifies for free lunch. Students face the everyday challenges of living in a low-income community. Students in Bridgeport experience the harmful effects of living in poverty such as a cultural disconnect.
Students in low-income neighborhoods are four times as likely to engage in chronic absenteeism.
The EL students that I work with face the pitfalls associated with low income and the challenge of transitioning to a new country. They push through to learn a new language, to become bi-cultural and bi-literate. In addition to the economic, academic and social challenges, students also face the task of coming to school with little or no resources.
My Project
Most students walk to school. The only students being bused are students that live more than 2 miles from the school or suffer a physical or health disability. Student attendance is impacted by the winter season.
Weather is definitely a factor in our school attendance when the winter hits.
Although students take their education seriously, students face the task of walking to school during the winter months without adequate attire. This past school year, almost half of our student body attended less than 85% of our calendared school days. They stop attending school because they do not have the proper winter clothes. Winter shoes are especially expensive.
This donation will help to mitigate the absenteeism issues and will increase student engagement.
