Diverse and prideful describes my students. In the largest town in our county, my classroom is filled with all ends of the student spectrum. Our school district is a draw for many families and we continue to expand.
All walks of life, therefore, sit before me, all coming together with a desire to belong.
Our students range from free lunch recipients to custom made meals. I hope to have a room where all can be equal and feel at home and feel that they belong.
My Project
In our school district, we have 12 different schools. That means that our language arts budget must be spread across all the grade levels, making it difficult to get the newest, hottest books each year.
It is already a challenge to get middle schoolers to engage in reading, and it becomes harder when the libraries are outdated.
Having these new award winning books will captivate my students and lead them down a path to being lifelong readers. This was the first time, after hanging the names of the new books in the classroom, that students were excited and asked if I could get copies of these works. That enthusiasm based on titles and blurbs shows the power that books can have on an 8th grader setting out to define themselves.
New books recognized as the best of their field will breathe new life into the classroom shelves that desperately want to be loved.
