My younger students are bright, funny and above all, curious! A trip to the media center is exciting for them, and they love being able to choose their own book! Unfortunately, for many of them, the book that they select from the library may be the only book that they have to read at home.
This lack of exposure to literature makes closing the academic achievement gap difficult yet even more important for these economically challenged students.
By providing them with resources at school that they can take home and share with their families, we can help them to make progress in their reading ability.
My Project
Since many of my students have limited exposure to books at home, I want to ensure that they have successful reading experiences here at school. Many times they have less free choice of books in classroom reading assignments, so I try to make sure that the books they have available to them in the media center are of good quality and are fun to read.
One way to accomplish these goals is to provide award-winning and nominated books for them.
These books, like Glow and Nerdy Birdy have been selected by experts in children's reading as being the best of the current offerings. I feel that by having them in the media center for my students, I will be helping them to gain success in their self-directed reading endeavors.
