Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you had to take a state test? Or any type of test to show what you've learned in school? It can be stressful. My Intervention students need more resources to help them reduce their anxieties toward taking the state test. They also need resources they can use at home.
My students are 3rd-5th graders who aren't meeting their academic standards in reading, writing, and comprehension.
This is the first time that they are being offered an Intervention class. This is an opportunity for them to close some of their gaps. My students are in a public school in California. All the students participate in the school-reduced lunch program. Many of them only feel safe in school. Our school is located in a city that is #2 in gang activity. All of the students that are in the Intervention groups are hard workers and they try their best everyday. It's sad that for my 5th graders, it's their last chance to close some of those gaps before middle school. These resources will further allow them to succeed both at school and at home.
My Project
Right now, our school doesn't have many resources that will help the students reduce their anxiety in taking the California State Test. The students need more resources that will give them the skills to pass the test. Hot Dots is a small group & independent reading program. The heart of the program is the Hot Dots Pen. It provides feedback as it talks, makes sounds, and even glows. When an answer is correct, the students will hear words of encouragement. If they answer incorrectly, it will tell them to try again. Students respond to positive reinforcement. The students become their own reading coaches. They use the Hot Dot pen to answer a variety of reading comprehension, grammar, and phonics questions. It's set up like the state test. This will allow the students to become more comfortable in their test taking skills. It will also allow them to be very successful in closing some of their achievement gaps.
My 3rd-5th grade Intervention students need a program such as Hot Dots because it'll lower their anxiety of taking the California state test.
It will give them the extra practice they need to answer multiple-choice questions. They will learn at their own pace. Hot Dots is great because they can also take the different academic sets home. Their parents can see them practicing and learning more. The parents will see their children gaining more self confidence.
