Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a large high school (1700 students) in a rural area. Our Physics classes have grown exponentially, but our equipment has not. As we moved from one teacher to three, we suddenly found ourselves in a severe lack of laboratory equipment.
We are the older, and now smaller, of two comprehensive high schools in our district.
Our students are mainly second language, and the majority of them qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. Many of them will be the first ones in their family to attend college.
My Project
Electrostatics is always one of the most fun (I know, shocking) sections we do in Physics. The students always love the demonstrations we do and get a charge out of learning. Although demonstrations are great, nothing beats hands-on learning. And that is where the Fun Fly Stick comes into play.
The Fun Fly Stick is a handheld, mini Van De Graaff generator.
It is safe for our students to use, and they can actively participate in the activities. With the Fun Fly Stick, we can charge a variety of shapes and make them float... make them dance... we can even make the shapes levitate as high as the ceiling allows. Fun Fly Stick is an electrostatics experiment that our students will not only not forget but will be begging to keep doing over and over. This is one of the labs that my students come back and talk to me about. Please give to this amazing project.
