My boys and girls are growing up in the same city I did. It's a wonderful place to grow up. It's small and tight knit and hardworking. Our families want the best for their students but they are also struggling to make ends meet, which leaves little time to instill the love of books. Our community is a suburb of Cincinnati, more than 60% of of students receive free or reduced lunch. Students are coming to school carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Some of them are exposed to so many negatives.
However, they come to school still seeking knowledge and looking for something that will help them succeed later in life while lessening the load they carry day to day.
They work hard and strive to be the best learners they can be. In our short time together, I have seen an amazing fire be lit in them. I hope to continue setting high expectations to help them overcome the poverty and hardship they see around them everyday. They are deep thinkers who have been given tough circumstances, and still they rise to all the expectations I've had--even surpassing them
My Project
The books included in this project will allow the boys and girls in my classroom to experience the world through the stories provided. These books such as, The Day the War came will help my students build empathy and understand the struggle experienced by so many children around the world. Rescue and Jessica will allow my students to see the relationship between an amputee and a dog an awesome picture of love helping to heal in a difficult situation.
Books that allow students to peek into the lives of others provide windows that students need to help form a well rounded social and emotional intelligence.
