My Students

My students are energetic, curious 7th graders. They live in a rural community that is quickly becoming suburban as our population is growing rapidly. These students are growing up in a time that is exciting with technological advances but also scary as they watch the conflict in the world.

These adolescents see news reports and videos of everything happening around the country and the world, but many of them have been sheltered from these events and ideas in their personal lives.

In my language arts department, we try to help students to understand multiple perspectives and diverse cultures and backgrounds. We recognize that books can be a window for these students to better understand others.

My students still remember being forced to school at home during COVID quarantine, and they recognize the importance of being at school. However, many of them are part of this digital generation and are finding less and less value in reading. In my class, I work on helping students find high-interest books that give them a new perspective into the life of others who are different from them and try to show them why this matters.

My Project

My project is to get class sets of books for us to read together. My students live in a rural community and many of them haven’t had the opportunity to consider what life might be like for others outside of this community or for those who live with disabilities. These class sets of books will give me a chance to have students read and discuss situations of other teens who are very different than themselves.

When students better understand others’ different perspectives and backgrounds, they have more empathy.

The world is going increasing digital, which has been amplified by the need to social distance and quarantine due to COVID-19. It is more important than ever to teach students to connect with others on an emotional level. Reading high-interest books about realistic characters facing challenges helps widen student perspectives and creates resilience. This generation needs these skills to navigate these complex and conflict-filled times.
